Job Role: Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist.

Job Description
 
Position Summary:
 
The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BMET) shall provide oversight of Medical Maintenance Operations and provide clinical and administrative support for all matters and concerns relating to the lifecycle management of medical equipment. Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist shall perform all activities related to repair, calibration, modification and overhaul of medical equipment as well as support USAMMC-SWA to include Forward Logistical Elements and Forward Distribution Teams.
 
Responsibilities
 
Major Responsibilities:
  • This job description outlines the general nature, essential duties and responsibilities of the work performed by employees in this classification. There may not be a comprehensive list of all the duties, responsibilities, and qualifications needed to carry out this job.
  • Provide lifecycle management and technical support of diagnostic, therapeutic, monitoring, and other equipment used in the practice of medicine, according to engineering and mechanical concepts and methodologies, and to improve clinical care.
  • Automation systems include, but are not limited to, TEWLS, Logistics Modernization Program (LMP), Army Enterprise Systems Integration Program (AESIP), Global Combat Support System – Army (GCSS-A), Depot Standard System (DSS) and Logistics Information Warehouse (LIW).
  • Maintain medical equipment. This includes repairing, calibrating, replacing scheduled parts, performing inspections, technical evaluations, performing quality control and quality assurances, as well as installing, de-installing, updating, and testing safety and function.
  • According to the manufacturer’s literature or technical bulletins, perform all maintenance and repairs. Complex repairs and calibrations may be needed.
  • Document all maintenance performed and time spent on medical equipment using an automated system. Using the approved maintenance management system, maintain the timecard; record productive, non-productive, direct, and indirect labor.
  • Provide quotes for all repair parts based on your research. Send a new item request (NIR) to obtain a repair part quote.
  • BMET will inspect newly acquired medical devices or devices found during installation for safety and function, and attach a certification label. Complete forms and labeling according to the guidelines in TB 38-750-2 (Maintenance Management Procedures for Medical Equipment).
  • Clinical, research, and technical staff shall receive training and guidance on the safe use, operation, and maintenance of medical equipment from the Contractor. Evaluate historical maintenance issues affecting supported facilities and provide recommendations to the Chief of Clinical Engineering.
  • Training and guidance on testing, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of medical equipment for other biomedical equipment technicians. Serve as a technical resource to other supported customers with organic biomedical equipment technicians.
  • Management of all medical systems, including imaging, life support, and monitoring, including physical and network support.
  • Knowledge of relevant safety codes and standards of regulatory bodies.
  • The computerized maintenance management system documents all work performed.
  • Implements basic networking principles in order to resolve medical system communication issues, including, but not limited to, node server failures. Follows medical device cyber security policies and procedures during pre-procurement, system implementation, and throughout the life of the system. Installs operating systems and clinical applications as required.
  • Investigation, remediation, and documentation of repairable medical device recalls and safety alerts issued through the recall management system.
  • Keeping up with the latest developments in medical technology, including scientific advances, network protocols, and vendor changes. Provides professional development in all areas of medical technology lifecycle management, including technical skills.
  • As assigned or required, perform other duties.

Working Environment:
  • The working environment will be 80% indoors, 20% outdoors.
  • Due to conditions in the region, the work environment will also be very hot (120 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • The ability to work rotating shift schedules and possibly provide coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is required.

One year of related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if a degree is required.
 
Education:
 
Associate Degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology, Biomedical Equipment Technology or Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related technical field such as Electronic Technology or Information Technology and four (4) years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist, Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, or Medical Equipment Repairer.
 
OR
 
Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related field such as Electronics Engineering Technology
 
OR
 
Completion of a military training program in Biomedical Equipment and four (4) years’ experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist or Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, or Medical Equipment Repairer.
 
Certifications:
  • Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) or Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES)
  • HAZMAT
  • HAZCOM
  • Certified TEWLS user
Experience:
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience related to the work of the position, which has equipped you with certain knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist.
  • I have served as a supply chain management leader, planning, coordinating, and evaluating various operations to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of a logistics program.
  • Specialized experience includes knowledge of a wide range of sciences including, but not limited to, electronics (analog and digital), computer science/networking, mechanical engineering design, pneumatics, hydraulics, chemistry, physiology, medical terminology, anatomy, optics, and biology to perform duties of a broad scope and nature on complex and sophisticated patient related medical systems and sub-systems.
  • Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours per week for 52 weeks
Skills:
  • Perform troubleshooting/repair and preventive maintenance activities utilizing various types of test and calibration equipment, such as, but not limited to, digital multi-meters, electrical safety analyzers, defibrillator analyzers, pulse generators, digital oscilloscopes, and local area network analyzers.
  • Knowledge of configuring and maintaining medical servers and desktop computers.
  • Knowledge of TEWLS, Logistics Modernization Program (LMP), Army Enterprise Systems Integration Program (AESIP), Global Combat Support System-Army (GCSS-A), Depot Standard System (DSS), and Logistics Information Warehouse (LIW)
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Management and supervisory skills must be excellent.
  • Proficient in intermediate-level Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Delegate work to subordinates according to the changing priorities of the USG and customers.
  • Testing and troubleshooting of medical devices involving their interfaces and connections to information systems directly or via hardwired or wireless networks.
  • Working knowledge of codes and standards relevant to the safe operation of medical equipment, such as the National Fire Protection Association, the Food and Drug Administration, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Joint Commission, and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation.
  • The importance of good organization and training cannot be overstated.
  • Maintain good relations with the USG and Customers by communicating effectively and building a rapport with them. Possess strong problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Should have knowledge of the various Logistics Systems used at USAMMC-SWA for order processing, storage management, transportation management, etc.
  • Ability to recognize and resolve customer issues quickly and independently.
  • Handle multiple tasks at any time.
